The second season returns to an alternative military era, where strategy and bureaucracy are more terrifying than any monster, and magic has become as routine a part of the army as artillery and communications. The main heroine, a little girl officer with an adult mind and cold logic, finds herself once again between the hammer of orders and the anvil of her own goals. She wants to live peacefully and safely, but war keeps dragging her deeper, forcing her to make decisions that change the fates of thousands. The series shines in its portrayal of war as a system where an individual soldier can be a hero while a staff can be a catastrophe, and vice versa. New fronts, new enemies, and new technologies appear, and with them the tension grows, because the heroine's success breeds envy, fear, and a desire to use her as a symbol. The story also features a mystical thread involving an entity that interferes with her fate, testing her faith, stubbornness, and pride. This is an anime for those who enjoy military drama, hard-edged realism in decision-making, and a character who is at once frightening and awe-inspiring.
